Reagent-free Chlorine Testing for Produce Washing

Friday, 13 February

The ChloroSense chlorine measurement system is a newly developed product from Palintest Ltd. The portable, self-contained device uses only a disposable electrode to test a sample of water, making the process much quicker, easier and less prone to inaccuracy than any other method. These features make the technology ideal for chlorine testing in the production and post-harvest handling of fresh fruit and vegetables.

Free and total chlorine concentrations are measured in under a minute, then stored in the ChloroSense's memory along with the time, date, and temperature of the water sample. The process is simple, and instructions and results are given by the LCD display built into the waterproof unit. Essentially the water sample is collected in a small container, a fresh electrode sensor is inserted, and then the lid is closed to start the test. Less than a minute later the device will have accurately tested the sample – without the hassle of carefully dosing out reagents, or having to find the correct range. No glassware is involved, ensuring safety and ease of use in any environment. Stored results can be reviewed on-site, or easily exported onto a PC via a waterproof USB port.

Each ChloroSense test is very cost-efficient thanks to the minimal need for consumables, and the instrument can automatically test concentration ranges from 0-100 mg/l – perfectly suited for any stage of produce harvesting where chlorination is introduced.
