Introduction
More imagesYour swimming pool is meant to be enjoyed, but the water must be tested regularly to ensure bather comfort and to protect against dangerous bacteria such as E.Coli.
Traditional pool testing works by taking a sample of water and adding a reagent tablet. The resulting colour then has to be visually compared against a colour chart.
The new state-of-the-art Cool Pooltester works differently: by reading the colour electronically and giving an instant, accurate numerical readout, it eliminates human error and reduces hassle.
The Cool Pooltester uses a similar technology to the photometers used by professionals, but is easy enough for anyone to use.
The Cool Pooltester is yours for just £79, and is available in four versions:
- Chlorine / pH / Alkalinity
- Chlorine / pH / Cyanuric Acid
- Bromine / pH / Alkalinity
- Bromine / pH / Chlorine

Why test?
Why you need to remain vigilant
Water is the "stuff of life". All living things depend upon water to survive, and so if there is any water around, living things tend to colonise it very quickly. Even laboratory grade "pure" water can grow bugs fast enough to block fine filters in a day or so.
This is why it is so important to treat pool and spa water carefully with the sanitising and conditioning chemicals recommended by the manufacturer of your pool. Since these chemicals are used up as they do their job of protecting you, you need to check regularly that they are still present at the right levels.
If you are using a pool or spa, you should check the chlorine and pH levels at least once every day before using it. If it has heavy use then more frequent testing is called for.
Possible health risks in pool and spa water
Pools and Spas which are looked after are safe and enjoyable places to be. Poorly maintained water however will quickly become host to all sorts of organisms – just think how quickly a bucket of water left out in the garden starts to "go off". Some of the bugs that grow can be very unpleasant. Legionella, E.Coli and other seriously dangerous stuff can grow in the warm pool or spa water if it isn't treated properly.
Keeping pool water safe is just a matter of following a few simple guidelines, and testing regularly. The new Cool Pooltester is just the ticket for safe, accurate testing, and peace of mind.
Regular monitoring keeps water safe
Just a few minutes spent each day on a good quality water test is all that's needed to help keep your pool and spa waters crystal clear and safe for everyone. A modern test instrument like the Cool Pooltester will give you more accurate results than any other test method, and you'll find your water quality will be all the better for it.
How does it work?
How to carry out regular and easy testing
The Cool Pooltester uses the worldwide recommended DPD test which is used by all the water companies to check chlorine levels in drinking water. Just add one DPD 1 tablet to your water sample. This easy and safe chemistry gives a colour range which is measured by the instrument and you read out the concentration directly on the LCD screen.
In addition to chlorine the Cool Pooltester can measure pH as well as Total Alkalinity, giving fast answers for key pool readings.
Traditional water testing methods
In the past, pool and spa owners have traditionally used Comparators and Liquid Drop Count Kits.
Users had to compare colours against printed or acetate colour blocks, but these only give a very rough guide to the chemical concentration. They depend upon the eyesight of the user and on lighting conditions.
What we offer now is a modern approach; the most accurate and up-to-date means of home pool water testing ever made available to the home user.
Photometer Methods: How do they Work?
Photometers work by passing a beam of light of a specific wavelength through the test sample containing reagents. The amount of light passing through the sample is measured on a photodetector. The photometer converts this reading into the concentration of the parameter being tested. Photometers are more accurate and precise than visual methods of comparison and eliminate errors due to differences in human eyesight.
Photometers: Chemistry and theory
Light consists of radiation to which the human eye is sensitive. Waves of different lengths give rise to light of different colours, while a mixture of light of these wavelengths constitutes white light.
Principle of Photometric Measurement
The Cool Pooltester is an instrument that accurately measures the colour at a closely controlled wavelength of light and converts that to a calibrated value for the chlorine.
Photometers have been used for many years by professional water engineers. The Cool Pooltester is the first photometer for the home user.
Pool Professor Software
Limited time offer!
This super software package is free of charge with every Cool Pooltester bought online!
Pool Professor software

The Pool Professor software helps you get the best from your new Cool Pooltester. It keeps a record of your test results and which chemicals you've added to your pool, and even suggests which chemicals to add, and when.
The software eliminates guesswork and saves you time and money, whilst helping you to keep your pool and spa water safer.
As well as keeping a record of your Cool Pooltester results, the Pool Professor will tell you:
- If the poolwater is corrosive or scale-forming
- Exactly which chemicals, in the proper sequence, to add to your pool
- If you need to "shock" (superchlorinate) the water, and how much of which chlorine to use.
The Pool Professor software is written by Roy Fielding of the University of North Carolina, an acknowledged expert in care and management of pools and spas.
